Freshers' Welcome - 2014: Report

event-photos Fresher’s Welcome for the batch of 2014-15 was organised on Friday, August 22, 2014 in the Multi-purpose Auditorium of the college. The campus was all decked up for the day to express its welcome to the new batch of students. There was a festive fervor amongst the entire student community, freshers and seniors alike and it was a warm and friendly atmosphere with smiling faces all around.

The Fresher’s Welcome began as Ms. Bhawna Rana, the Students Union President initiated the ‘Tilak’ ceremony by applying vermillion on the forehead of each fresher and gifting them a chocolate each. This gesture was symbolic of the new students becoming a part of Bhagini Nivedita College. Ms. Isha, the Cultural Secretary of the Students Union was the compere and she kept the audience captivated and engaged throughout the event. The event got off to a colourful start with a bevy of beautifully clad students performing the welcome dance on the stage.

The Freshers' welcome function had a different but a very meaninful opening with the Ms. Bhawna Rana inviting the SHO of the Jaffarpur, Inspector Mr. Pradeep, who was accompanied by Inspector Mr.Krishan and Beat Constable Ms. Sonia to sensitise the students about the need for safety and security precautions. Inspector Pradeep gave the students very useful information and guidance. He assured the students that the police department will attend to every incident or complaint brought to their notice promptly and effectively. Principal Dr. Purabi Saikia summed up the guidelines outlined by Inspector Pradeep for the benefit of the students

The festive mood of the day was fully manifested in the enthralling performances of the senior students as the contestants for Miss Fresher’s were getting ready  to walk the ramp. The main attraction of the day was the Miss Fresher’s Contest for which the 20 participating candidates had been preparing since last few weeks. The contest was designed by the Students Union members with guidance from the Student Advisory and Transport Committee.

The contest had four rounds including two rounds of ramp walking in traditional and western garments followed by a talent display round and the final question and answer round.There were three judges from amongst the faculty, chosen by the organising team of the students to judge the different rounds of the contest. The judges scored the contestants based on three broad criteria namely, dressing style, ramp walk and the overall presentation. During the talent display round the contestants showcased a wide variety of talents such as singing and dancing. Senior students also took the stage in between the different rounds of the contest and kept audience involved and engossed. The contestants as well as the seniors performing on the stage received loud cheers and enthusiastic applause.

The final Q & A round had eight brilliant contestants. It was not an easy task for the judges to pick the winners. After the completion of the very interesting Q & A round, the judges finally declared the winners. The crowds cheered, clicked photos and applauded as the winners of the titles were being announced.

The winners were crowned by Ms. Shikha, last year's Miss Fresher. Ms. Bhawna Rana gave away the sashes. Dr. Charru Sharma, Convenor, Student Advisory and Transport Committee handed over the bouquets and prizes to all the winning contestants. Refreshment coupons were also distributed to all the students

In the end, Dr. Sharma thanked the Principal, the students, the entire faculty, members of the Student Advisory and Transport Committee and the non-teaching staff for their support for the success of the event.

The main coordinators of the event were Dr. Charru Sharma, Convenor of the Student Advisory and Transport Committee and Ms. Bhawna Verma, President of the BNC Students Union.
