event-photos An awareness creation presentation on 'Managing and Recycling Electronic Waste' was held on October 15, 2014  from 12.40 to 1.30 PM. at the Computer Centre of the college under the joint auspices the Eco-Club, Institutional Social Responsibility Society (ISR) and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college.

The main objective of the programme was to sensitise the students about the E-waste collection drive proposed to be launched in the college in collaboration with Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group – a Non Governmental Organisation.  Ms. Ankita Hazarika from Chintan was the resource person for the event.

The programme commenced with a short film on e-waste, which demonstrated the unscrupulous ways in which electronic wastes sold to the scrap collectors were being recycled adopting illegal methods leading to heavy pollution of the soil and water bodies. The film also depicted how such illegal recycling of electronic wastes posed serious health hazards to the workers engaged in dismantling the electronic products and recovering the precious metals

In her presentation, Ms. Hazarika acquainted the students about E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011 formulated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India. She also informed the participants that Chintan was one of the NGOs authorised to collect e-waste. She provided a list of electronic items, which posed a threat to the environment and appealed to the students to participate in the e-waste collection drive to be started soon in the college.

She emphasised that Chintan takes all the steps required to ensure that e-wastes are managed in a manner, which protects the environment and prevents health hazards. Chintan makes use of the services of licensed recyclers who have been specifically approved by the government for recycling electronic wastes so as to prevent all the ill effects, which may result from hazardous substances contained in such wastes. She also added  that students can apply for a short term internship with Chintan through their website.

Dr. Rachna Mohan, Co-ordinator of IQAC in her concluding remarks thanked Chintan for their collaboration and Ms. Hazarika for her insightful presentation. She also appealed to the students to participate in the e-waste collection drive enthusiastically and make their contribution towards the cause of environmentally sound recycling and disposal of e-wastes.
