BNC Students win prize at inter-college cuisine competition


Nayantara Shukla and Neha Sharma, students of the B.Sc Home Science Honors Course (Semester V) won the second prize at the Inter-college cuisine competition organised by the Institute of Home Economics of the University of Delhi on September 3, 2015 in the premises of the Institute at Hauz Khas Enclave, New Delhi.

The contestants were required to choose any festival menu of any Indian state and cook the items at home and present it at the competition in a stall decorated to fit the theme of the cuisine.

Nayantara and Neha chose the Kashmiri cuisine of the Herath festival, which is celebrated for a full fortnight to mark the appearance of the jwala-linga or a linga of flame - called ‘Herath’ in Kashmiri. They also decorated the stall with Kashmiri Shawls, Ferans (Kashmiri Clothes), Dizoru, Namda(carpet), Shikara, Tikozi (kettle cover), Kangri (Fire Pot), Chinar (Dinning Set), etc.

The Kashmiri dishes, which they made for the competition included:


  • Kehwa (Exotic Kashmiri Tea)
  • Nadar Chaman (Paneer)
  • Dum Aaloo, (Potato)
  • Nadur Yakhni (Lotus Stem)
  • Vazul Phool (Cauliflower)
  • Nadar Monje (Lotus Stem)
  • Modur Pulav (Rice)
  • Walnut Chutni


The competition was tough and there were contestants from many colleges of Delhi University as well as from other private colleges also. The panel of judges not only visited each stall and compared the dishes but also interviewed the contestants by asking questions about the different recipes and the cooking processes used.

The judges finally announced that the Second prize went to Nayantara Shukla & Neha Sharma of Bhagini Nivedita College. The BNC team's performance was commendable as they were able to overcome the stiff challenge from the traditional winners of the competition.

The students were guided and kept motivated by Ms Punita Sethi, Assoc. Professor of the Home Science Department of the College.
