D.U Vist to U.K : Educational Excellence for Students with Disabilities

From June 29 to July 7, 2013, a select group of faculty members and students of Delhi University visited King’s College of London and University of Edinburgh in Scotland under a ‘Cultural Exchange Progamme’ to gain first-hand knowledge of the special facilities provided by these institutions for students with different needs and the technologies, which helped the students in coping with their constrains. Dr. Vandana Sharma from the of Music Department of the college was selected to be one of the members of the group.

This visit was part of the International Educational Excellence Programme for students with disabilities, a first of it’s kind initiative taken by Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chancellor of University of Delhi. Prof. Dinesh Singh supervised the project with the support of Prof. Malashri Lal, Dean - Academic Activities and Projects and Chairperson, Research Council.

Faculty members from other Delhi University Departments and colleges who participated in the visit were Dr. Renu Malaviya, Lady Irwin College; Dr. Avinash Kumar, Deptt. of Psychology; and Dr. Shikha Sharma, Miranda House. Two student volunteers were selected from amongst those who had been working with the Equal Opportunity Cell and had shown considerable dedication and potential.

Dr. Vandana Sharma got the opportunity to supervise the programme and represent University of Delhi at the University of Edinburgh. She also participated in the following seminars:

  • Counseling Services
  • Careers Services
  • eVOLVe Group Volunteering Event – Edinburgh North Dementia Centre
  • Disability – A UK Perspective

She was also the first to undertake the wall climbing sports actvity and her successful efforts were appreciated by the Sports Unit of University of Edinburgh.
